Specialities

In my practice I specialise in the treatment of Nervous System Dysregulation and the myriad of impacts it can have on our minds, bodies and general well-being. Keep reading for more information.

What is Nervous System Dysregulation?

The nervous system is essentially your body's control centre: a network of nerves that influences numerous

non-conscious physiological functions, as varied as speech, movement, organ processes, and emotions. The longest nerve in the body is cranial number X, more commonly known as the Vegas Nerve.

The nervous system is divided into two major subdivisions: the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The sympathetic nervous system triggers the “fight-or-flight” response, preparing the body to confront or escape from threats. Conversely, the parasympathetic nervous system promotes rest and relaxation, helping the body to recover and maintain a state of calm. Nervous System Dysregulation (NDS) refers to an imbalance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems and the body’s inability to feel safe, becoming stuck in the sympathetic state.

The Vegas Nerve is bi-directional, meaning messages are sent from the brain to the body but also from the body to the brain. If the body is stuck in the sympathetic state, the message to the brain reads ‘I am not safe’. As the Vegas Nerve reaches to almost every system in the body, this condition can manifest in various physiological symptoms, such as pain, fatigue, seizures, bladder and stomach issues, and, in extreme cases, partial paralysis. More frequently however, NDS presents as emotional symptoms, including depression, anxiety, exhaustion, irritability, over-reactions, such as tantrums, or under-reactions, such as shutting down and disassociation.

In my practice, I work with you to identify the root cause of your unique experience, and agree on a treatment plan to bring relief to your symptoms and a greater sense of balance in your life.
